About This Game Inspired by chess, but adding combat that YOU control, Archon was the original Battle Chess. You must try to outmaneuver your opponent using teams of fantasy creatures or monsters in this epic struggle of Light and Dark. On the chess board, when you challenge a piece, you are teleported into a Combat Arena where you fight in REAL-TIME until only the victor emerges to claim the square on the chess board. If you didn't play the original, I doubt that you will like it. I would play Archon frequently with a friend. Basically, it's fantasy chess with "living" pieces. When a piece invades an enemy's square, you fight it out. It's simple, but fun.There is one glaring flaw to the game. There is no remote play option. There is no excuse for not having, what is now, a very standard feature.. a remake of original Archon with + better graphics.+ new layouts.+ very similar gameplay.+ singleplayer campaign.+ multiplayer mode up to 4-players!(it's possible for 2vs1 battle, should be possible too for 2vs2)the problems are :- the graphics are still not good compared to current games.- the AIs are either too easy or too difficult.- the (early?) campaign is just some repetitive battles.- the multiplayer mode is only hot-seat. (no lan/internet)if you were a fan of original Archon, have extra gamepads andfriends nearby to play with, maybe you can enjoy the game.. OK, first off, I actually owned the original game plus its sequel Archon II:Adept as a kid in the 80s. This is just bad. This game has bad graphics, bad sound effects, and annoying music. Neither the campaign mode nor any of the added features like a 4-player variation make this game worth any amount. Also, only local multiplayer? The only thing that this game has going for it is nostalgia. Oh yeah, did i mention the hard crash to the Windows desktop midgame? I am glad I ONLY paid 99 cents for it. Stay away.. Loved the original Archon on C64. Strategic tabletop positioning, distinct yet balanced factions with unique pieces, game-changing spell management and skill based combat duels. Archon was ahead of it's time and a precursor for many modern game mechanics. Archon Classic captures and enhances that. Good fun.. I played Archon on the Commodore 64 and it was one of my favorite games growing up. This version is both a faithful adaptation of the original game and a great modernization of that game. It is easily worth the money.. I used to play the hell out of this on the Commodore 64.. This is a pretty decent remake of the classis Archon game, worth picking up for cheap. :) I can't wait until they patch in online play, though.. So I learned there is a version of Archon Classic available. I have been playing this 25 years ago on the Commodore 64, and it’s available for Steam. A short purchase and test play later: this actually works. Slightly more modernised graphics, if you care (or true old style pixels, if you do not like that), and the dynamics of the gameplay have been preserved. New play modes have been added.Very worthwhile, even if you do not know the original.In Archon, you play an epic battle between light and dark.On the strategy board you move pieces like in chess, only that some fields are permanently light and dark, and others are changing affiliation with the phases of the moon. Light pieces are stronger on light fields, dark pieces on dark fields.If you strike a piece, the game switches to an arcade battle arena, in which the pieces fight each other in melee or ranged combat. Each side has unique pieces with unique, but balanced abilities.Additional complications are two spellcasters (one per side), no-magic zones and power points, which can heal pieces, but are also a second venue for winning. The gameplay is a nice combination of board game strategics and classic 80ies arcade battle.
